What Is Holding You Back in Your Life and What To Do about It
Do you have a dream?
Something you’ve always wanted to do, try, or be? A fantasy that you sometimes entertain? Why don’t you make it a reality? What is holding you back?
I think everyone has dreams and desires that we think of and sometimes fantasize about. But we often don’t even consider making these dreams a reality. Therefore we never get there, these dreams remain nothing more than wishes, and we don’t even consider the possibility!
The last thing I want for my life is to be at the end of it full of regrets, instead I want to feel complete, having lived my life fully and I want this for you too!
I want you to live the life you have always imagined you would have.
I want you to do everything you desire and more. I want you to know that anything is possible and we can do anything we actually set our mind to.
The only thing that holds us back from anything, is ourselves. We can allow our limiting beliefs to hold us back in every aspect of our lives, if we let them.
If you can unravel the beliefs that are holding you back, you can literally create any life you choose!
Follow these 4 steps to get started on your path of possibilities.
1. What Do You Want?
The first thing you have to do is decide what you want. Many of us don’t know what we want, we just know we aren’t fulfilled. We may be yearning for something unnamed and have no idea what it is until we make a point to dig in and figure it out.
Get out your journal and start writing. When you have an idea of what you want, go a step further and jot down the steps it would take to get there. The education, the money, the time, everything that comes to mind. Get it all down on paper.
2. Write Down Why You Can’t
Now write down why you can’t do the thing. What is the overarching reason it cannot be done by you? You’re too old. You don’t have the money. You don’t have the time. Whatever comes to mind.
Next, look at the tasks you’d need to complete and write down all the reasons you can’t do those. This should come pretty easy to you, most of us tend to go to the obstacles before we get to solutions.
You have just identified many, if not all, of your limiting beliefs. Limiting beliefs are the negative thoughts we think about ourselves so often we believe them to be true.
3. For each belief or reason why you can’t do something on your list I want you to come up with two thoughts or reasons why or how you can.
Most of our limiting thoughts are not true and we just need to look for proof to prove this to ourselves.
For example do you think you are too old? I bet you can Google and find 10 people who have made the changes you want to make that are older than you. Think of JK Rowling, Sam Walton, and Samuel L. Jackson, all very successful, all over forty by the time they achieved their success.
Not disciplined enough? Do you brush your teeth everyday? What else do you do on a regular basis? Proof of discipline.
Not creative? Do you love applying make-up or decorating? Those require as much creativity as any other art. Proof of creativity.
We are in charge of what we think, even if it doesn’t seem like we are. Sometimes we believe something for so long it gets worn deep in our mind like a rut. It may not be easy to change, but you can, with practice.
Recognize when you are thinking the limiting thought or belief and decide what thought you can believe that is more empowering and practice that instead. Practice thoughts you can believe or it won’t help.
- I don’t know how becomes, I am learning.
- It’s too late becomes, it’s never too late.
- I can’t lose weight becomes, I am in charge of my body, my thoughts, and my urges.
- I’ve never done this before becomes, I love doing new things.
- I don’t have the money becomes, how can I get the money for this.
- I don’t have time becomes, I’m in charge of my time and time is abundant.
- No one will hire me becomes, there are billions of people in the world.
- I’m not good enough becomes, I am as human as the rest of humanity.
- I can’t do becomes, how can I?
- I am broken becomes, I am exactly as I should be.
4. Get Creative
What can you do now to live into your dreams? If you want to be an artist, start painting now.
Start a savings account now, for that monetary goal, even if it’s a few dollars a week.
Each small step you take in the direction of what you want to achieve will help you two-fold. 1. You will be living in alignment with your essential self which just feels amazing and 2. You will be gaining self-confidence with each small win and step in the right direction.
Practice being the person already living your dream life.
What does she think, feel, and do? Emulate her. Remember if you want a different life, you have to be a different person, that absolutely applies here, be the person who is living the life you want.
